President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, disciplined leadership and lifelong service to Nigeria.
In a statement issued to mark the centenary celebration of the Yoruba leader, President Tinubu said his joy knew no bounds as Fasoranti attained the remarkable milestone of 100 years, noting that the elder statesman has lived a life defined by principle, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to national development.
The President praised Fasoranti as a man whose life reflects honesty, discipline and dedication to public service, stressing that his contributions to Nigeria cut across education, politics and pro democracy activism. Tinubu recalled Fasoranti’s early involvement in education, highlighting his academic background and his contributions as a teacher and founder of educational institutions. He noted that the centenarian played a key role in shaping young minds through schools he established and supported over the years, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the education sector.
The President also reflected on Fasoranti’s political journey, describing him as one of the last surviving disciples of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He noted that the Afenifere leader participated actively in Nigeria’s political evolution, serving in the Action Group during the First Republic and later the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
Tinubu further acknowledged Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, where he was widely credited for his integrity and prudent management of public resources.
The President also commended his role in Nigeria’s pro democracy struggle, noting that Fasoranti remained a strong voice against military rule and consistently advocated for the return of civilian governance. He described him as one of the key figures who stood firm during difficult political periods in the country’s history.
Tinubu recalled the challenges the elder statesman faced, including an assassination attempt during the military era, as well as personal tragedies such as the loss of his wife and daughter, noting that despite these pains, Fasoranti remained resilient and committed to national service.
He also expressed gratitude to Fasoranti for his support during his presidential journey, saying the elder statesman had prayed for his success and continued to offer counsel and encouragement to his administration.
