Nigerian rapper YCee has spoken candidly about one of the most challenging periods of his life, revealing how a mental health diagnosis in 2020 significantly affected both his creativity and music career.

The “Jagaban” hitmaker made the revelation during a recent appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, where he disclosed that he was diagnosed with a mental health condition during the COVID-19 lockdown. According to the rapper, the diagnosis marked the beginning of a difficult journey that forced him to step away from music and focus on his recovery.

YCee explained that he spent six months in London during the lockdown period and was repeatedly hospitalized for about three months as doctors worked to manage his condition. Reflecting on the impact of the illness, YCee admitted that his life became unpredictable, with moments of hope often followed by periods of darkness. He revealed that the condition affected his consistency, creative output, and overall career progression, making it difficult to maintain the momentum he had built in the Nigerian music industry.

The rapper’s disclosure also sheds light on the reasons behind his prolonged absence from the spotlight. Earlier this month, he had spoken about taking a break from music to embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, a decision that now appears closely connected to his mental health struggles.

Despite the setbacks, YCee expressed gratitude for the support and medical care he received throughout the process. He revealed that he is now in a much better and more stable place mentally, giving fans hope that he has successfully navigated one of the toughest chapters of his life.

The rapper has previously used his platform to encourage people facing mental health challenges to seek professional help and avoid suffering in silence. His latest revelation adds a personal dimension to that advocacy, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, treatment, and support systems in overcoming mental health difficulties.

YCee’s story has sparked conversations across social media, with many fans praising his courage for speaking openly about mental health, a subject that still carries significant stigma in many parts of society. His experience serves as a reminder that even successful public figures can face unseen battles and that seeking help remains a vital step toward healing and recovery.
