Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has described the proposed $7 billion Gateway Deep Sea Port and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone as major projects that could reshape the state’s economy and strengthen Nigeria’s position in regional and international trade.
The Ogun State Government and DP World recently signed Memoranda of Understanding for the development of the deep seaport and the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.
The projects are expected to attract more than $7 billion in initial investment and create over 50,000 direct jobs, with additional employment opportunities anticipated across several sectors...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .
Speaking on the significance of the development, Abiodun said the seaport would go beyond providing a facility for ships, describing it as a gateway through which Ogun State and Nigeria’s productive capacity could connect more effectively with African and global markets.
According to the governor, the project is designed to deepen trade, attract foreign investment, expand export capacity and strengthen the country’s maritime economy.
He said the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone would also create opportunities in logistics, manufacturing, maritime services, technology and other industries while supporting small and medium-sized businesses.
The development is expected to help reduce pressure on existing Lagos port infrastructure by providing an additional maritime gateway and improving the movement of goods within the region. The proposed port is planned for Ogun Waterside and is expected to have a four-kilometre berth and an 18-metre draft.
Abiodun also linked the project to a wider infrastructure network involving the Gateway International Airport, dry ports and road connections, saying the combination could improve Ogun’s connectivity and strengthen its role as an industrial and logistics hub.
The governor, however, stressed that the success of the agreements would ultimately depend on implementation rather than the signing ceremonies.
He said the state government was committed to working with its partners while also emphasising the importance of environmental sustainability, security and the involvement of host communities.
The deep seaport and special economic zone are therefore being positioned as part of a broader economic development strategy aimed at attracting capital, creating jobs, expanding industrial activity and increasing Ogun State’s participation in international trade.
With the agreements now signed, attention is expected to shift toward the implementation of the projects and whether the planned investments and economic benefits can be delivered.
