The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government to make important information about their activities easily accessible to Nigerians through their websites and digital platforms.
Akume made the call while speaking at the presentation of the 2026 Transparency and Integrity Index in Abuja, where he urged government institutions to turn the findings of the index into practical improvements in their daily operations.

The SGF specifically called on MDAs to publish up-to-date information on their budgets, government contracts and services online. According to him, making such information available would allow citizens to better understand government activities and monitor how public resources are being used.
Akume also urged government agencies to ensure that the information provided on their websites and data portals is accurate, timely and presented in a user-friendly manner.
He said the 2026 Transparency and Integrity Index evaluates public institutions across areas including fiscal transparency, procurement and contracting, human resources and inclusion, corruption control and citizen engagement.
The SGF further called on heads of MDAs to incorporate the findings of the index into strategic planning, budget decisions, procurement processes, staff development and communication with the public.
He warned against allowing the report to become another government document that is simply produced and abandoned without being used to improve public institutions.
Akume maintained that effective transparency requires more than publishing reports. He said government institutions must strengthen record keeping, oversight, ethical leadership and internal procedures while ensuring that wrongdoing attracts appropriate consequences.
He also encouraged greater use of technology to improve communication between government and citizens, saying digital platforms could help Nigerians access information and engage more effectively with public institutions.
The Federal Government has continued to introduce digital tools aimed at improving monitoring, accountability and transparency across the public service.
Akume said the broader objective should be to build government institutions that citizens can understand, engage with and hold accountable while ensuring that public resources are properly managed and government services improve.
He also called for stronger cooperation between government institutions, civil society organisations, professional bodies, development partners and the media in efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability across the country.
