The Federal Government has welcomed the suspension of the teachers’ strike in Oyo State, describing the development as a significant breakthrough that will restore uninterrupted learning in public schools across the state.
The strike, which disrupted academic activities for weeks, was called off after extensive discussions involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Oyo State Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers at the national, zonal and state levels. The resolution paves the way for thousands of teachers to return to their classrooms and resume academic activities.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying the decision reflected the commitment of all parties to place the welfare and future of schoolchildren above every other concern. The minister also commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his leadership and willingness to engage stakeholders in resolving the dispute. He equally praised the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, its South West zonal officials and the Oyo State chapter for working together to achieve a peaceful settlement.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to quality education, Alausa stressed that children must remain in school despite security challenges. He said the government would continue working with state governments, teachers’ unions, security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure schools remain safe and conducive for teaching and learning.
The industrial action began after teachers withdrew their services over security concerns following the abduction of teachers and pupils from schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The incident sparked widespread concern and prompted the union to demand stronger measures to protect teachers and students before returning to work.
Although classrooms have now reopened, the government has assured the public that efforts to secure the release of the remaining abducted victims and strengthen security around schools will continue. Authorities say the renewed partnership between the Federal Government, Oyo State and education stakeholders is expected to improve school safety while ensuring that students no longer suffer disruptions to their education.
