Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a major setback in their quest to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON.
The highly anticipated encounter ended in disappointment for the nine time African champions, who were unable to overturn an early setback despite creating several opportunities throughout the match.

The Super Falcons pushed forward in search of an equaliser but repeatedly found themselves frustrated by Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina. The goalkeeper delivered an outstanding performance, making eight crucial saves to deny Nigeria and preserve her team’s narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Nigeria had opportunities to get back into the contest but struggled to convert them into goals. Despite their efforts and sustained pressure, the Super Falcons could not find a breakthrough as Cameroon defended their advantage with determination.
The defeat carries significant consequences beyond Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign. The 2026 tournament is also serving as Africa’s qualifying competition for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Only the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi finals will secure automatic qualification for the global tournament.
By losing in the quarter finals, Nigeria has therefore missed out on the opportunity to secure one of the continent’s automatic World Cup tickets through the WAFCON semi final route.
However, the Super Falcons’ hopes of appearing at the 2027 Women’s World Cup have not completely disappeared. Nigeria will now have to take the more difficult African play off route alongside the other teams that were eliminated at the quarter final stage.
Victory in that play off pathway could give Nigeria another opportunity to progress to the inter confederation play offs, where another chance to secure a place at the World Cup will be available.
For Cameroon, the victory was a significant achievement as it secured the Indomitable Lionesses a place in the WAFCON semi finals and, in the process, guaranteed them an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The result will come as a major disappointment to Nigeria, particularly given the Super Falcons’ reputation as the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The team will now have to quickly regroup and focus on the remaining qualification opportunity rather than allowing the defeat to derail their World Cup ambitions.
The Super Falcons’ journey to Brazil has therefore become considerably more difficult, but qualification remains within reach. Nigeria will need to respond strongly in the upcoming play off matches if the country is to maintain its long standing presence at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
