The Federal Government has officially commenced the long awaited reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos, unveiling an ambitious plan to replace the ageing structure with a modern world class bridge expected to be completed within 36 months.
The project, which is estimated to cost over N545 billion, was formally handed over to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation during a ceremony attended by top government officials and stakeholders in Lagos. The reconstruction is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to address deteriorating infrastructure and improve transportation safety across the country.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, explained that the decision to fully reconstruct the bridge followed years of technical investigations which revealed severe structural defects beneath the water, particularly around the bridge’s underwater piles and pile caps. Umahi disclosed that the new Carter Bridge will feature a modern cable stayed section designed not only to improve aesthetics but also to enhance navigational activities along the Lagos waterways. He noted that the upgraded structure would include wider carriageways, additional ramps, and improved traffic management features aimed at reducing congestion around Lagos Island and adjoining routes.
The minister further stated that the bridge reconstruction would be funded through a mixed financing arrangement, with the Federal Government providing about 30 percent of the funding while the remaining 70 percent would be sourced through external borrowing. He emphasized that due process was followed in selecting the contractor, noting that several companies participated in the bidding process before CCECC emerged as the most technically and commercially viable option.
Carter Bridge remains one of Lagos’ oldest and most important transport links, connecting Lagos Island to the mainland through the Iddo axis. Originally built during the colonial era and later expanded decades ago, the bridge has served millions of commuters, traders, and businesses over the years. However, increasing traffic pressure, environmental exposure, and ageing infrastructure have contributed to growing concerns over its long term safety and durability.
Officials revealed that recent underwater inspections showed that some of the bridge’s support piles had shifted away from their pile caps, creating significant structural risks. Umahi described the level of deterioration as alarming, warning that continued use without urgent intervention could endanger lives and disrupt economic activities in Lagos.
The reconstruction project is also expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity during the construction period. Government officials expressed confidence that the completed bridge will significantly improve transportation efficiency and support Lagos’ growing population and commercial importance.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government also announced emergency interventions on Eko Bridge following structural concerns linked to illegal dredging activities around the area. Authorities stated that one carriageway of the bridge would face temporary closure to allow urgent repairs and prevent further damage.
Stakeholders have welcomed the Carter Bridge reconstruction as a major infrastructure milestone, with many describing it as a necessary investment in the future of Lagos transportation. Analysts believe the project could reshape movement within the city if completed successfully and on schedule.
As work begins, attention will remain focused on how effectively the government manages the project timeline, funding, and traffic disruptions expected during the construction period. For millions of Lagos residents who rely on the bridge daily, the reconstruction represents both a challenge and a promise of safer, more efficient infrastructure in the years ahead.
