Nigeria’s anti narcotics authorities have recorded another major breakthrough in the fight against transnational drug trafficking after arresting a Mexican national described as a key figure in a methamphetamine network and dismantling an industrial scale clandestine laboratory in Ebonyi State.
The suspect, identified as Arturo Carrera Loaiza, was arrested on August 19, 2026, while allegedly attempting to leave Nigeria through the Lagos airport. His arrest followed months of investigations into a wider network suspected of establishing illegal methamphetamine production facilities in different parts of the country.

During the investigation, authorities reportedly recovered photographs showing Loaiza in a laboratory environment. Location information associated with the images allegedly helped investigators identify a property at Isiata Ugoni Okposi in Ebonyi State, where another suspected methamphetamine production facility was subsequently discovered.
A search of the Ebonyi property reportedly revealed equipment and materials believed to have been assembled for large scale methamphetamine production. Surveillance footage also allegedly placed Loaiza at the location alongside a Nigerian suspect identified as John Samuel Ivo Okike.
Authorities said the development formed part of a broader investigation into an international network involving foreign drug experts and Nigerian collaborators. The investigation had previously uncovered suspected clandestine laboratories in Ogun and Oyo states, raising concerns about attempts by organised criminal groups to establish drug manufacturing operations inside Nigeria.
According to investigators, Loaiza allegedly played a role in recruiting foreign technical expertise for the production operation. During interrogation, however, he reportedly denied knowledge of methamphetamine manufacturing and claimed that a Nigerian contact known as Henry had invited him to Nigeria under the guise of a restaurant business venture. The latest operation has highlighted the increasingly international nature of Nigeria’s illicit drug trade, with authorities alleging that foreign nationals were brought into the country to provide technical knowledge for the production of dangerous substances.
The authorities have also warned that clandestine laboratories may be established in secluded rural and forested locations in an attempt to evade detection. Security and drug enforcement officials have consequently urged residents to report suspicious movements, unusual chemical odours and unfamiliar activities around isolated properties.
The investigation into the network remains ongoing, with authorities expected to examine the roles of other individuals connected to the suspected operations and determine the full extent of the organisation’s activities.
The arrest of Loaiza and the dismantling of the Ebonyi laboratory represent another significant development in the country’s efforts to prevent Nigeria from becoming a major production base for illicit synthetic drugs. Previous operations have also resulted in the discovery of large scale methamphetamine facilities and the arrest of foreign nationals and Nigerian collaborators.
Authorities have maintained that the fight against drug trafficking will continue, particularly against criminal networks attempting to move beyond the transportation of illicit substances into large scale local production.
