Zamfara State has taken a significant step toward becoming a major player in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry following the inauguration of a $200 million lithium mining and processing plant by Governor Dauda Lawal. The landmark project, located in Boko Village in Zurmi Local Government Area, is expected to accelerate industrial growth, create thousands of jobs and position the state as a key contributor to the global clean energy supply chain.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Lawal described the project as a turning point in the state’s economic development agenda, stressing that Zamfara can no longer afford to remain a source of raw mineral exports. Instead, the state is focusing on processing its mineral resources locally to generate more value, boost manufacturing, develop technical skills and expand employment opportunities for its people.
The lithium processing plant is a joint investment involving ZAM Mining Company Limited, Bima Mines Limited, Jinlide Mining Company Limited and other strategic partners. Governor Lawal noted that lithium has become one of the world’s most sought after minerals because of its importance in producing rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems and modern electronic devices. He explained that as global demand for critical minerals continues to rise, Zamfara intends to take advantage of its vast natural resources by participating in the entire value chain rather than exporting unprocessed minerals abroad.
The governor also assured investors that his administration remains committed to creating a secure and business friendly environment through improved infrastructure, stronger collaboration with the Federal Government and policies that encourage lawful and sustainable mining operations. He emphasized that mining activities must protect the environment, comply with existing regulations and deliver direct benefits to host communities.
Lawal further directed the operators of the facility to prioritise local employment, skills acquisition, community development and corporate social responsibility, insisting that residents of Boko Village and surrounding communities should be among the biggest beneficiaries of the investment. According to him, the project is not only about extracting valuable minerals but also about improving livelihoods, stimulating economic activities and creating lasting prosperity for future generations.
With the commissioning of the lithium processing plant, Zamfara has strengthened its position in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding solid minerals sector and signalled its determination to become a major destination for mining investment.
