Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced a ₦41 million support package for 41 Edo indigenes who recently returned from South Africa after fleeing renewed xenophobic attacks that forced many Nigerians to abandon their homes, businesses and livelihoods. The intervention is aimed at helping the returnees rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society after the traumatic experience abroad.
Receiving the returnees at the Festival Hall of the Government House in Benin City, the governor disclosed that each beneficiary would receive ₦1 million within 24 hours to secure accommodation and meet immediate needs. He also assured them that the state government would provide access to soft loans to enable them establish businesses, become self reliant and successfully restart their lives in Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo expressed sympathy for the returnees, noting that many had lost valuable investments and properties during the attacks. He encouraged them not to dwell on their material losses, stressing that their lives were far more important than any possessions left behind. He further assured the returnees that Edo State remains peaceful and secure, urging them to take advantage of the opportunities available at home. Speaking on behalf of the returnees, Riches Unubun thanked both the Edo State Government and the Federal Government for facilitating their evacuation from South Africa and providing assistance upon their return. He described the intervention as timely and pledged that the beneficiaries would remain responsible citizens while contributing positively to the development of the state.
The latest intervention comes amid growing concerns over renewed anti immigrant protests and xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have prompted the Federal Government to evacuate hundreds of Nigerians willing to return home. Authorities have continued to reassure affected citizens of their commitment to ensuring their safety while working with relevant agencies to support their reintegration into society.
