Nipples may look simple, but they are an important part of breast anatomy and can vary significantly from one woman to another.

Their size, shape, colour and position can naturally differ, and changes can occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause. Knowing what is normal for you can make it easier to recognise unusual changes.

Here are some important facts about women’s nipples...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

1. Nipples come in different shapes

Not every nipple looks the same. Some protrude outward, while others are flat or naturally point inward.

Flat or inverted nipples can be completely normal, especially when a person has always had them that way. However, a nipple that suddenly becomes inverted or changes position should be checked by a healthcare professional.

2. The colour can naturally vary

Nipples and areolas can have different shades depending on factors such as genetics, age and hormonal changes.

Pregnancy can also cause the nipples and areolas to become darker or change in appearance.

There is no single colour that every woman’s nipples are supposed to have.

3. One nipple may look different from the other

Breasts and nipples do not always look perfectly symmetrical.

Differences in size, shape or position can be completely normal. What matters more is whether you notice a new or unusual change compared with what is normal for you.

4. Nipples are important for breastfeeding

Nipples contain openings connected to milk ducts. During breastfeeding, milk passes through these openings while the baby also latches onto the surrounding areola.

Flat or inverted nipples do not necessarily prevent breastfeeding. Many people with different nipple shapes are able to breastfeed successfully.

5. Nipples can be sensitive

Nipples contain many nerves, which means they can be sensitive to touch, temperature and hormonal changes.

Sensitivity can also change during menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding or because of friction from clothing.

Persistent nipple pain, however, should not simply be ignored, particularly when it occurs with other breast changes.

6. Nipple discharge has many possible causes

Fluid coming from the nipple can occur during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but discharge can also have other causes.

It may be clear, white, yellow, green or another colour. Although nipple discharge is not necessarily a sign of a serious condition, new or unexplained discharge should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

7. Sudden nipple changes deserve attention

Women should pay attention to changes that are unusual for them.

These can include a newly inverted nipple, persistent pain, a rash or crusting around the nipple, a lump, changes in skin texture or unexplained discharge, particularly bloody discharge. These symptoms can have many causes and do not automatically mean cancer, but medical assessment is important.

Know what is normal for you

There is a wide range of normal when it comes to breasts and nipples. The most important thing is becoming familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so that you can notice changes.

If you discover a new lump, unexplained nipple discharge, a persistent rash, a sudden change in nipple position or another unusual breast change, speak with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose the problem yourself.

Your nipples can naturally look different from someone else’s. What deserves attention is a change that is new, persistent or unusual for you.
