Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has explained why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar appointed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as Deputy Chairman of his 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

Speaking about the decision, Momodu said El-Rufai’s political difficulties were part of the reason for his inclusion in the leadership of the campaign council.

He also pointed to El-Rufai’s decision to return to Nigeria despite knowing that he could face arrest, describing it as an indication of his commitment to the country.

El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings and has denied wrongdoing. Momodu also criticised the bail conditions attached to the former governor’s case, describing them as excessive.

The ADC chieftain further highlighted El-Rufai’s political influence, claiming that the former governor played an important role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

Momodu said El-Rufai’s appointment therefore reflects his political relevance as the ADC begins preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

Other prominent figures named in Atiku’s campaign structure include former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, Dino Melaye and several other political stakeholders.
