Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said he would review policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Obi, speaking during a recent interview, criticised several aspects of the current administration’s economic management and said his government would focus on policies that directly improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
He specifically discussed the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that savings from the policy should produce visible benefits through investments in productive sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, education, healthcare and small businesses...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .
According to Obi, Nigeria should redirect government resources towards areas capable of creating jobs, increasing production and improving household incomes. He also said the country needs stronger investment in agriculture and manufacturing, particularly in regions with significant economic potential.
On the foreign exchange market, Obi said he would retain the floating of the naira if elected, but would support the policy with increased domestic production. He argued that strengthening productivity would help improve the value and usefulness of the currency.
The former Anambra State governor also outlined his approach to government spending, saying he would prioritise existing infrastructure rather than spending heavily on new presidential facilities. He said public funds should be directed towards projects that have a direct impact on Nigerians.
Obi further promised a more hands on approach to governance, saying he would personally engage with communities and visit states to understand challenges affecting citizens. He also identified insecurity as a major national concern and said his administration would take a more direct approach to addressing criminal activities.
On state police, Obi said his government would consider the option if the existing security structure proved insufficient, while ensuring that appropriate safeguards were established.
He also said his administration would not pay ransom to kidnappers and would take decisive measures against criminal groups responsible for abductions and insecurity.
Obi maintained that his proposed approach to governance would emphasise accountability, responsible spending, productivity and direct engagement with Nigerians. He also reiterated his position that political decisions should not be driven primarily by ethnic or religious considerations.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to feature several major political parties and candidates, with economic management, insecurity, governance and the direction of government reforms likely to remain central issues in the campaign.
Obi said that if elected, his administration would seek to change the direction of the country by placing greater emphasis on productive investment, accountability and policies intended to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
