The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has fined RwandAir N15 million over a consumer protection violation involving a passenger’s damaged baggage.

The regulator’s action highlights the importance of airlines responding promptly to passenger complaints, particularly when travellers experience problems involving damaged, delayed or mishandled luggage.

The case also reinforces the authority of Nigeria’s aviation regulator to impose penalties on both domestic and international airlines operating in the country when they fail to meet established consumer protection requirements.

For passengers, the development serves as a reminder that they have rights when their baggage is damaged or mishandled during air travel. Airlines are expected to address legitimate complaints within the prescribed period and provide appropriate remedies where passengers are entitled to compensation.

The latest sanction is part of wider regulatory efforts to ensure that airlines operating in Nigeria comply with consumer protection rules and treat passengers fairly.

Air travellers who encounter baggage problems are therefore encouraged to properly document their complaints and follow the appropriate channels for seeking redress. The RwandAir case demonstrates that unresolved passenger complaints can result in regulatory action and financial penalties for airlines.

The N15 million fine, together with the order to replace the damaged baggage and pay $170 compensation, sends a clear message that passenger protection remains an important part of aviation regulation in Nigeria.
