Following his exit, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly. Idiaye is a third term lawmaker and now takes responsibility for leading the legislature at a politically significant period in the state.
Agbebaku later explained that his decision was taken in the interest of peace, Edo State and his immediate constituency, Owan West. He also maintained that differences among lawmakers were natural because of their individual views and beliefs, but said such differences did not prevent the Assembly from passing bills and resolutions during his tenure.
The former Speaker also expressed appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support and cooperation while he served as Speaker. He urged his supporters to remain calm and called on members of the Assembly to work together for the progress of the state.
The emergence of Idiaye is expected to mark a new chapter for the Edo legislature as the new leadership seeks to stabilise the House and restore unity among lawmakers.
Governor Okpebholo has also urged the new Assembly leadership to put personal differences aside and concentrate on serving the people. He called for transparency, dialogue, teamwork and inclusiveness, while reminding lawmakers of the responsibility attached to their positions.
The governor further stressed that disagreements within the legislature should be resolved internally rather than becoming public disputes. He urged the new Speaker to carry all members along and ensure that the Assembly remains focused on its legislative responsibilities.
For Agbebaku, the resignation brings an end to his tenure as Speaker of the Eighth Edo State House of Assembly. For the legislature, the immediate task is to move beyond the leadership crisis and ensure that legislative activities continue without disruption.
The sudden change in leadership is likely to attract further political attention in Edo State, particularly as stakeholders watch how the new Speaker manages relations among lawmakers and with the executive arm of government.
With Idiaye now at the helm, expectations are high that the Edo Assembly will prioritise stability, effective legislation and issues affecting residents as the new leadership begins its tenure.
