Leeds United forward Noah Okafor has announced that he will no longer represent Switzerland while Murat Yakin remains the national team manager, bringing a dramatic turn to his international career.
The 26 year old forward made the decision public after what he described as a serious breakdown in trust between himself and the coaching staff. The forward was included in Switzerland’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America but was given limited opportunities during the tournament. He made only one appearance, coming off the bench for 19 minutes during Switzerland’s victory over Algeria in the knockout stage.
Okafor said his frustration was not simply a matter of being left on the bench. According to him, incidents surrounding his treatment and the reaction to mistakes he made during his appearance against Algeria contributed significantly to his decision.
