Nigerian Army troops have intercepted a suspected explosives courier carrying 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives in Zamfara State, preventing the dangerous materials from reaching suspected terrorist elements operating in the North West.
The interception was carried out by troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, during routine vehicle checks conducted by personnel of Sector 2 on Friday.
The suspected courier, identified as 57 year old Sani Umar, was reportedly transporting the explosives from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State towards Jibia Local Government Area of neighbouring Katsina State, where the materials were allegedly intended for suspected terrorist elements...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .
According to the military, the discovery was made after troops stopped and searched the vehicle during a routine snap check. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of all 180 units of the explosives.
The suspect, his vehicle and the recovered explosives have since been taken into custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to establish the source of the explosives, their intended recipients and the wider network allegedly involved in the movement of the materials.
The interception came as troops were also conducting offensive operations against terrorist elements in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The operation highlights the continued efforts by security forces to disrupt the movement of weapons and explosives across communities affected by terrorism and banditry. The recovery of such a large quantity of explosive materials is particularly significant because of the potential danger they could pose if they reached criminal groups operating in the region.
