South Africa eventually secured a 2–1 victory, with the result sending Banyana Banyana into the next stage of the World Cup qualification process while Nigeria were eliminated from the race.
The defeat represents a historic disappointment for the Super Falcons because Nigeria had never previously missed a FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. The team had been a constant presence at every edition, making the latest elimination particularly painful for Nigerian football supporters.
Nigeria’s hopes were not completely gone at the start of the encounter. After failing to reach the semi finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Falcons still had another opportunity through the play off route. However, the defeat to South Africa meant that opportunity has now disappeared.
South Africa took control of the contest and eventually built a two goal advantage. Nigeria refused to give up and continued pushing for a way back into the match.
Christy Ucheibe eventually gave the Super Falcons renewed hope by converting a penalty in stoppage time. The late goal reduced the deficit to 2–1 and created a tense finish, but Nigeria could not find the equaliser before the final whistle.
The result means South Africa will continue their journey through the intercontinental play off process, where they will have another opportunity to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament.
For Nigeria, however, the defeat brings an abrupt end to the World Cup campaign and raises fresh questions about the future of the team.
The Super Falcons remain one of Africa’s most successful women’s national teams, with a long history of continental success and regular appearances on the world stage. Their absence from the 2027 World Cup will therefore be a major change for Nigerian football.
The loss also comes at a difficult time for the team following their disappointing exit from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Falcons had been expected to challenge strongly for continental honours, but their defeat prevented them from securing one of the automatic World Cup qualification places available through the tournament.
Their subsequent defeat to South Africa closed the remaining door.
For Nigerian fans, the result is likely to generate disappointment and debate over the direction of women’s football in the country. Questions are expected to be raised about preparation, tactical decisions, player development and the overall strategy for maintaining Nigeria’s position among Africa’s leading football nations.
Despite the disappointment, the Super Falcons still have a strong foundation of experienced players and emerging talents. The focus will now shift towards rebuilding and ensuring that Nigeria returns stronger in future international competitions.
South Africa’s victory, meanwhile, gives Banyana Banyana another opportunity to fight for a place at the 2027 World Cup. Their journey is not yet complete, but the victory over Nigeria has kept their hopes alive.
For the Super Falcons, the story is very different. After more than three decades of uninterrupted participation, Nigeria will not be represented at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It is a painful moment for one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football teams and a result that will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest setbacks in the history of Nigerian women’s football.
