The National Union of Road Transport Workers has been thrown into mourning following the killing of its Lagos State Organising Secretary, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, after a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen in Lagos.
According to reports, Ajiboye was returning home on Sunday night from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi when armed assailants intercepted his vehicle around the Ikorodu Road axis and opened fire. His white vehicle was riddled with bullets, leaving the union official and other occupants with serious gunshot injuries.
Initial reports suggested that Ajiboye survived the attack and was receiving medical treatment. However, it was later confirmed that he succumbed to the injuries sustained during the shooting, sending shockwaves through members of the NURTW and the wider Lagos community. Images and videos circulating on social media after the incident showed the extent of the attack, with multiple bullet holes visible on the vehicle’s windscreen and body, further highlighting the brutality of the ambush.
Reacting to the tragic development, the Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, widely known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a devastating loss. He paid an emotional tribute to the late union leader, describing him as a loyal ally, dependable friend and one of the strongest pillars of the union. Sego said Ajiboye’s unwavering commitment, dedication and years of service to the organisation would never be forgotten.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and give those left behind the strength to bear the painful loss.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, while the identities of the gunmen have yet to be established. Security agencies are expected to intensify investigations to uncover those responsible and determine whether the killing was linked to criminal activity, personal grievances or other motives.
The incident has once again renewed concerns over violent attacks and the safety of prominent figures in Lagos, with many Nigerians calling for a swift investigation and the prosecution of those behind the assassination.
