Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has expressed deep concern over the political tension building ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat if urgent steps are not taken to curb violence and guarantee a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
Speaking during a public engagement in Osun State, Adeleke appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what he described as increasing politically motivated violence, alleging that lives have been lost and several supporters of his party have been subjected to intimidation and selective arrests. He urged the President, as the nation’s leader, to ensure that all Nigerians are treated fairly regardless of political affiliation.
The governor warned that any attempt to manipulate the forthcoming election could have serious consequences for the country’s democratic system. Adeleke also accused security agencies, particularly the police, of failing to maintain neutrality in the build up to the election. While reaffirming his confidence in the National Peace Committee to help de-escalate tensions, he called on all institutions involved in the electoral process to act professionally and uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and impartiality.
