Umahi Breaks Silence on Nurse’s Death at His Residence, Orders Autopsy and Threatens Legal Action

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the death of a young nurse, Mary Habila, at his residence in Ebonyi State, firmly denying allegations that the circumstances of her passing were concealed and insisting that the matter has been handled transparently from the very beginning.

Speaking during an inspection of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Highway, Umahi explained that it was the deceased’s family members who became worried after they could not reach her and eventually forced open the door to her room. According to him, medical personnel from the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital were immediately contacted and made every effort to revive her before she was pronounced dead. He stressed that the family subsequently reported the incident to the police, dismissing claims that anyone attempted to cover up what happened.

The minister disclosed that he has directed that an autopsy be conducted to establish the exact cause of Mary Habila’s death, noting that the procedure will be carried out with the consent of her parents, who are currently in Ebonyi State. Umahi described the deceased as a dedicated staff member of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital and expressed sadness over her death. He also announced that his legal team has been instructed to take action against individuals and platforms he accused of spreading false and misleading information about the incident. According to him, the deceased’s family also intends to address the media and pursue legal remedies against those responsible for circulating what they consider to be unfounded allegations.

The minister reiterated that law enforcement authorities were informed immediately after the incident occurred and urged Nigerians to allow the police and medical experts to complete their investigations without interference or speculation. The case has attracted widespread public attention, with many calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. The outcome of the autopsy and the ongoing police inquiry is expected to provide clearer answers about the circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death.
