Award winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has revealed that the death of her 21 month old son, Nkanu, has profoundly changed her feelings towards Nigeria.
In a recent interview, Adichie said the loss of her son has affected her emotional connection to the country where she grew up and built much of her identity as a writer.

Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twin sons, died following a medical emergency in Nigeria. His death has since become the subject of a coroner’s inquest, with questions surrounding the circumstances of his treatment.
Adichie has previously spoken publicly about her grief and concerns over what happened to her son. She said the experience has been deeply traumatic and has altered the way she now views returning to Nigeria.
Despite her personal decision, she acknowledged that her children’s feelings could influence the family’s future relationship with the country. Her daughter, she noted, still considers Nigeria her “happy place.”
The author’s emotional disclosure has renewed conversations about grief, healthcare and the difficult relationship many Nigerians have with their home country after experiencing painful personal tragedies.
