Aquatic life is returning to several creeks in Ogoniland, Rivers State, following ongoing environmental remediation efforts aimed at restoring areas affected by decades of oil pollution.
The Federal Government said the return of fishes, periwinkles, crabs and shrimps is a major sign that the ecosystem is gradually recovering. The development is also expected to support the livelihoods of communities that depend heavily on fishing and other aquatic resources.

Authorities said significant progress has also been recorded in soil and groundwater remediation, mangrove restoration, healthcare and access to potable water.
The cleanup programme has created more than 8,500 direct jobs for Ogoni youths and women, while 1,420 community workers recently received maritime and swimming certifications.
Residents have, however, been urged to protect the returning marine life by avoiding overharvesting and indiscriminate destruction of mangroves.
Officials said continued cooperation from communities would be essential to preserving the environmental gains and ensuring that Ogoni’s waterways remain productive for future generations.
