The Lagos Waste Management Authority has arrested a resident of Meiran, Lagos State, for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel while rainfall was ongoing.
The arrest was carried out on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, by a joint enforcement operation involving the LAWMA Enforcement Team, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, and mobile police officers attached to the enforcement team.
The suspect was apprehended after the enforcement team received a tip off alleging that the resident was disposing of refuse into a drainage channel during the rainfall. The development has renewed concerns over indiscriminate waste disposal in Lagos, particularly during the rainy season when blocked drainage channels can worsen the impact of heavy rainfall and increase the risk of flooding in communities.
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against using drainage channels as dumping grounds for household waste, stressing that refuse thrown into gutters and waterways can obstruct the movement of stormwater and contribute to flooding.
The latest arrest is part of a wider enforcement campaign aimed at improving environmental sanitation and discouraging practices that can threaten public safety and the cleanliness of communities across Lagos State.
The state has continued to intensify enforcement against individuals and businesses accused of violating environmental regulations. Several residents have previously faced legal consequences for dumping refuse at unauthorised locations, while businesses and shops have also been targeted during enforcement operations.
In July, several environmental offenders were sentenced to four months in prison by an Oshodi Special Offences and Mobile Court after being arrested during enforcement operations. Another resident was also arrested during the same period for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Ikorodu.
The enforcement campaign has also extended to commercial areas, with authorities taking action against businesses accused of indiscriminate waste disposal.
The authorities have continued to appeal to residents to take responsibility for proper waste disposal and make use of approved waste collection channels rather than disposing of refuse on roads, waterways or drainage systems.
The latest arrest serves as another warning to Lagos residents that indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly during rainfall, could attract enforcement action and prosecution.
With heavy rainfall capable of quickly overwhelming drainage systems, proper waste management remains an important part of efforts to reduce flooding and maintain a healthier urban environment.
