Researchers Discover the “Sweet Spot” for Healthier Aging
A major new study has revealed that both too little sleep and excessive sleep may accelerate biological aging, potentially affecting the brain, heart, lungs and nearly every major organ in the body. Scientists found that adults who consistently sleep between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night showed the healthiest aging patterns compared to those who slept less than six hours or more than eight hours daily.
The research, published in Nature and highlighted by Healthline, analysed data from nearly 500,000 participants in the UK Biobank. How Sleep Affects Biological Aging
Scientists explained that biological age differs from chronological age. While chronological age simply counts the number of years a person has lived, biological age reflects how healthy or worn down the body’s cells and organs actually are.
The study discovered a “U-shaped” relationship between sleep and aging, meaning both extremes were linked to faster aging. Sleeping too little was associated with increased inflammation, poor glucose regulation, weakened immune function and elevated stress hormones, all of which may contribute to quicker cellular deterioration.
Researchers also noted that excessive sleep may signal underlying health conditions that themselves contribute to accelerated aging. Long sleep duration was linked to disorders affecting the brain and mental health, including depression and other neurological conditions.
Diseases Linked to Poor Sleep Habits
According to the findings, inadequate sleep was associated with a higher risk of several chronic illnesses, including obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression. The research also connected unhealthy sleep patterns with respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as digestive disorders like gastritis and acid reflux.
Experts involved in the discussion stressed that sleep is not just about rest for the brain but a critical process that helps maintain overall organ health, metabolism and immune balance throughout the body.
Sleep’s Critical Role in Organ Repair and Immune Function
Scientists involved in the study stressed that sleep is essential for cellular restoration and organ recovery. During sleep, the body performs critical maintenance processes that support immune defence, tissue repair, hormonal regulation and cognitive function.
Deep sleep stages are particularly important because they allow the brain to consolidate memories, regulate emotional processing and remove metabolic waste products that build up during the day. At the same time, the immune system releases proteins and antibodies that help the body fight infections and inflammation.
Researchers explained that disruptions to this natural repair cycle over long periods may accelerate wear and tear on the body, leading to earlier onset of age related diseases and physical decline.
The study also found connections between unhealthy sleep patterns and respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as digestive conditions including acid reflux and gastritis. Cardiovascular complications, weakened immunity and metabolic dysfunction were similarly linked to poor sleep behavior.
Experts Recommend Consistent Sleep Routine
Health specialists say maintaining a regular sleep schedule may be one of the simplest ways to support healthy aging. Experts advised adults to aim for quality sleep by reducing screen time before bed, exercising regularly, managing stress and sticking to consistent bedtime and wake up routines.
The findings have sparked widespread discussion online, with many people reacting to the idea that sleeping too much could be just as harmful as sleeping too little. However, researchers cautioned that the study only shows an association and does not prove that sleep duration alone directly causes faster aging.
