A new study has challenged the long held assumption that longer periods of sexual abstinence are always better for male fertility. Researchers have found that prolonged abstinence may actually affect sperm quality, with frequently ejaculated sperm showing potential advantages in areas linked to fertility.
The research examined semen data from 115 studies involving nearly 55,000 men, alongside findings from 56 studies involving about 30 different animal species. Researchers were interested in understanding what happens to sperm when it remains stored in the reproductive system for extended periods.

According to the findings, prolonged sexual abstinence was associated with declines in some measures of sperm quality. The study also found an increase in DNA damage among sperm following prolonged storage. These changes could be important because successful fertilisation depends not only on the number of sperm available but also on their ability to move effectively and maintain healthy genetic material.
Why Freshly Ejaculated Sperm Could Matter
Researchers suggested that sperm may undergo biological changes while being stored in the reproductive system. Over time, some stored sperm may become less effective compared with sperm that has been ejaculated more recently.

The Study Does Not Mean Men Must Ejaculate Constantly
