The move comes after the 35-year-old left Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli following three seasons with the Jeddah-based side.
The former Manchester City star is now set to begin a new chapter in Qatar as he continues his career outside Europe.
Mahrez enjoyed a productive spell at Al Ahli, making 122 appearances across competitions.
During his time with the Saudi club, the Algerian recorded 37 goals and 50 assists, contributing directly to 87 goals.
He also helped Al Ahli achieve major continental success, including two AFC Champions League Elite titles and a Saudi Super Cup triumph.
The move to Al Shamal will see Mahrez bring considerable experience to the Qatari side.
Before moving to Saudi Arabia, the winger enjoyed a decorated career in European football, particularly during his time at Manchester City, where he won several major trophies.
He also played a key role in Leicester City’s historic Premier League title triumph before establishing himself as one of the leading African players in European football.
Mahrez has since retired from international football with Algeria, bringing an end to a national-team career in which he established himself as one of the country’s most recognisable players.
At 35, Mahrez’s move to Al Shamal represents another stage in an increasingly international career.
The short-term agreement is expected to give the experienced winger an opportunity to continue playing at a competitive level while adding attacking quality and experience to the Qatari club.
The transfer is now expected to be formally completed, with Mahrez preparing to begin his latest football adventure in Qatar.
