Hundreds of commuters have been left stranded after severe flooding cut off a major section of the Agbarho-Ughelli road in Delta State, bringing movement along the busy route to a standstill.
The situation developed after days of persistent rainfall caused floodwater to rise across parts of Agbarho and Ughelli, with several communities also recording extensive damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure.

The flooding initially affected one lane of the highway, forcing motorists to squeeze through the remaining section. However, as the water continued to rise, the second lane was also affected, effectively cutting off vehicular movement.
Passengers and motorists travelling between Ughelli, Agbarho and other communities were forced to remain on the road for hours as they searched for alternative routes.
Some travellers reportedly attempted to divert through Agbarho town, but several alternative routes were also affected by the flood, making it difficult for motorists to continue their journeys.
The development has created fresh concerns for residents and businesses that depend heavily on the highway, which serves as an important transportation corridor connecting several communities in Delta State.
The flooding has also affected residential areas in Agbarho and Ughelli, with families in some locations forced to leave their homes after floodwater entered buildings.
Areas including Upper Agbarho, Afiesere and Oteri in Ughelli have reportedly experienced serious flooding, while several streets and access roads have become difficult or impossible to use.
Agbarho has been particularly affected, with floodwater spreading across different parts of the community and disrupting normal activities.
Some schools in affected areas have also been forced to suspend activities after floodwater made school premises and access roads inaccessible.
Residents have expressed concern that continued rainfall could worsen the situation, particularly if drainage channels remain overwhelmed and more sections of the road become damaged.
The latest incident has renewed calls for urgent intervention to restore the damaged portion of the highway and provide a safe temporary route for stranded commuters.
Residents are also calling for drainage systems and culverts along the corridor to be urgently inspected and repaired to prevent further deterioration as rainfall continues.
