Peter Obi has promised that his administration would consider restoring petroleum subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general elections, saying corruption in the subsidy system would first have to be addressed.
Obi made the statement during a town hall meeting in Sokoto as part of his ongoing political engagements with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Obi, addressing alleged corruption associated with the petroleum subsidy system would create room for a different approach to cushioning the impact of fuel costs on Nigerians.
He said his position was not simply about returning to the previous subsidy arrangement but about tackling the problems he believes contributed to its challenges.
Obi also outlined some of the areas he said would receive priority under his proposed administration.
He listed education, security and economic development among the areas where government resources should be directed.
The presidential candidate described education as a major priority and said increased investment in the sector would be necessary to improve Nigeria’s long-term development.
He also spoke about the need to address insecurity and create conditions that would allow Nigerians to live, work and conduct their businesses safely.
As part of his development plans, Obi said he would seek to connect state capitals across Nigeria through railway infrastructure.
According to him, improved rail connectivity would facilitate movement, stimulate economic activity and strengthen connections between different parts of the country.
He also described his political approach as one focused on service and responding to the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
Obi’s running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also addressed the gathering and said security remained a major concern across several parts of the country.
He particularly highlighted the North-West, where banditry and kidnapping have continued to affect communities.
Kwankwaso said the proposed administration would work towards addressing insecurity and improving the welfare of Nigerians.
The Sokoto meeting formed part of the Obi-Kwankwaso team’s wider consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the candidates using town hall engagements to present their plans and interact with residents.
