Global crude oil prices climbed to $107 per barrel on Monday as uncertainty over the conflict involving the United States and Iran continued to disrupt oil supplies.

The price later eased to around $105 per barrel, but markets remained highly sensitive to developments surrounding the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar is seeking to broker fresh discussions between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the conflict and restore movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatari mediators were expected to hold separate discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US representatives in New York.

The proposed talks are expected to examine an amended version of a seven-day proposal put forward by Iran as diplomatic efforts intensify.

Iran Offers Proposal to Reopen Strait

Under Iran’s proposal, hostilities involving Iran and Lebanon would end, while billions of dollars in Iranian assets could be unfrozen.

The proposal also calls for the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

In exchange, Tehran would allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, while Washington and Tehran would return to negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, the initial proposal was rejected by US President Donald Trump, although he has indicated that further discussions with Iran could take place.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Any prolonged disruption to the waterway can create concerns about global energy supplies and put upward pressure on crude prices.

The current disruption has therefore increased volatility in international oil markets, with traders closely watching diplomatic developments.

What This Means for Oil Prices

The movement in crude prices shows how quickly geopolitical developments can affect the global energy market.

If diplomatic efforts lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, concerns over supply disruptions could ease.

However, if negotiations fail and the disruption continues, oil prices could remain volatile as markets assess the potential impact on global supplies.

As of the latest reports, it remained unclear whether the planned discussions had already taken place because of the time difference between New York and Nigeria.

For now, investors and energy markets are closely monitoring the diplomatic efforts as the future of the Strait of Hormuz remains central to the outlook for crude oil prices.
