Some countries in the world have histories that stretch back thousands of years, long before the modern map of nations existed.

From ancient Egypt to Persia and Greece, these countries have preserved remarkable cultural identities and historical traditions through centuries of wars, invasions, dynastic changes and political transformation.

While there is no universally accepted ranking of the world’s oldest countries, these five are frequently mentioned because of the ancient civilisations associated with their territories...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

1. Egypt

Egypt is widely regarded as one of the world’s oldest civilisations.

The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BC, traditionally associated with King Narmer, marked the beginning of the early Egyptian state.

Ancient Egypt went on to develop one of the world’s most influential civilisations, leaving behind the pyramids, temples, hieroglyphic writing and other remarkable achievements.

The country’s modern identity remains strongly connected to its ancient heritage.

2. China

China has one of the longest continuous cultural and political histories in the world.

The Xia Dynasty is traditionally dated to around 2070 BC, although the historical evidence surrounding the dynasty remains debated.

Over thousands of years, China experienced numerous dynasties, political changes and periods of conflict while maintaining a distinctive cultural identity.

Its contributions to science, technology, philosophy and the arts have had a lasting influence around the world.

3. Iran

Modern-day Iran occupies territory with an exceptionally ancient history.

Civilisations in the region date back thousands of years, including the Elamite civilisation, which is associated with the area from around 3200 BC.

The Persian Empire later emerged as one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world under Cyrus the Great around the sixth century BC.

Although Iran has undergone major political and dynastic changes, Persian cultural identity has remained a significant part of its history.

4. Greece

Greece has roots stretching back to the Mycenaean civilisation, which flourished more than 3,000 years ago.

Ancient Greek civilisation later produced influential city-states such as Athens and Sparta and made major contributions to philosophy, politics, mathematics, science, literature and the arts.

Modern Greece became an independent state in the 19th century, but its national culture draws heavily on the country’s much older historical heritage.

5. Ethiopia

Ethiopia is another African country with an exceptionally long recorded history.

The ancient D’mt kingdom, generally dated to around the first millennium BC, is among the early civilisations associated with the region.

The later Kingdom of Aksum became an important power in northeastern Africa and developed strong commercial links with other parts of the ancient world.

Ethiopia’s distinctive cultural, linguistic and religious traditions have also contributed to its long historical identity.

Why It Is Difficult to Name the Oldest Country

The phrase “oldest country” can be misleading because modern nation-states are relatively recent political creations.

A country can be considered ancient because of its civilisation, cultural continuity, historical kingdoms or long-standing political identity.

For example, San Marino is traditionally considered the world’s oldest surviving republic, with a foundation date of AD 301, while Japan is often cited for having the world’s oldest continuous hereditary monarchy.

Therefore, there is no single universally accepted list of the five oldest countries.

What these nations do share is an extraordinary historical legacy that has survived for thousands of years and continues to influence their identities today.
