According to the police, tactical operatives successfully countered the attack and forced the suspected terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush. Security personnel subsequently conducted a search and clearance operation around the area to ensure that there were no additional explosive devices that could pose a further threat to the convoy.
The convoy, which included Gubio, government officials and other political stakeholders, was eventually moved to a secure location. No member of the entourage was reported killed or injured in the incident.
The attack reportedly occurred around the Kareto axis of the highway, a route in northern Borno that has continued to face security challenges linked to insurgent activities.
Although reports indicated that a police armoured vehicle attached to the convoy was damaged during the attack, authorities said the security response prevented the attackers from causing casualties among the people travelling with the APC candidate.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the security situation in northern Borno, where residents and travellers continue to face the threat of attacks from insurgent groups.
Gubio’s trip to Damasak was aimed at appreciating APC supporters following his emergence as the party’s candidate. The journey back to Maiduguri was interrupted by the attack, but the intervention of security personnel allowed the convoy to continue safely.
The development comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. The attack could further raise concerns about the safety of political candidates, supporters and other stakeholders travelling through areas affected by insecurity.
Security agencies are expected to maintain increased vigilance along vulnerable routes in Borno as political activities continue across the state.
Despite the intensity of the attack, the successful response by the security forces ensured that Gubio and other members of his entourage escaped without reported casualties.
