Political parties are expected to use the campaign period to present their candidates, explain their programmes and policies, and convince Nigerians why they should be entrusted with political offices at the federal and state levels.

The 2027 elections are already attracting considerable attention because of the expected political realignments and the growing interest among political parties and aspirants seeking to challenge the existing political order.

The All Progressives Congress, which controls the Federal Government, is expected to defend its position, while opposition parties and emerging political platforms are expected to intensify efforts to build a strong alternative.

The African Democratic Congress has also emerged as one of the parties attracting attention ahead of the elections, particularly amid discussions about opposition collaboration and possible political realignments.

The National Democratic Congress and other registered parties are similarly expected to use the campaign period to strengthen their structures, mobilise supporters and communicate their political agenda to voters.

With campaigns officially permitted, political activities are expected to increase across the country. Parties will likely organise rallies, town hall meetings, consultations and grassroots mobilisation programmes as they seek to expand their support base.

However, political parties and their candidates will be expected to conduct their campaigns within the boundaries of Nigeria’s electoral laws. Issues surrounding hate speech, incitement, violence, vote buying, misinformation and the misuse of public resources are likely to remain major concerns as campaign activities intensify.

The commission’s approval also places greater responsibility on political actors to focus on issues that matter to Nigerians, including economic growth, employment, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure and the overall welfare of citizens.

For voters, the commencement of campaigns provides an opportunity to assess competing candidates and political parties before making decisions at the polls.

As the 2027 election season gathers momentum, Nigerians are likely to witness increased political activity, new alliances and sharper competition among parties seeking to control political offices across the country.

The formal commencement of campaigns therefore marks an important step towards the 2027 general elections, with political parties now expected to take their ambitions directly to the electorate and convince Nigerians that they deserve their votes.
