Nigeria’s renewable energy sector is entering a new phase of growth as industry leaders shift their attention from simply expanding solar power generation to investing heavily in battery storage and smart energy infrastructure. The new direction emerged as a key focus at the Solar & Storage Live Nigeria 2026 conference, where government officials, energy experts, investors, and renewable energy stakeholders agreed that battery storage will define the next stage of Nigeria’s clean energy transition. According to the President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), Ayo Adedimulua, the long-held belief that renewable energy is too expensive is no longer accurate, noting that the prices of solar components have fallen significantly over the last 10 to 15 years, making clean energy increasingly competitive with diesel and petrol-powered electricity generation. Adedimulua explained that unlike fossil fuels, which are consumed once purchased, investments in solar panels and battery systems continue to provide electricity for years, offering better long-term value for homes and businesses. He also stressed that Nigeria possesses enormous renewable energy resources beyond solar, including hydro, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy, but these opportunities remain largely underutilised despite their huge economic potential. Speaking at the conference, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr. Abba Aliyu, said the next wave of investments in Nigeria’s electricity sector will be driven by energy storage rather than power generation alone. He revealed that the agency is currently developing 48 interconnected mini grids with a combined capacity of about 288 megawatts to improve electricity supply in underserved communities. He added that the projects are being equipped with smart meters and Internet of Things technology to enhance energy management, improve billing efficiency, and strengthen system reliability. Aliyu also disclosed that the agency has deployed artificial intelligence to map more than 750,000 communities across Nigeria, enabling it to identify locations with the greatest electricity needs and determine where renewable energy investments will have the highest economic impact. According to him, the Electricity Act 2023 has opened the door for greater private sector participation by giving states more authority over electricity regulation, although implementation has progressed at different speeds across the country.
