Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make the academic certificates and credentials of all candidates contesting the 2027 general elections publicly available, insisting that transparency is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Obi made the appeal as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum. He argued that Nigerians deserve the opportunity to examine the qualifications and credentials of those seeking public office before casting their votes.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the publication of candidates’ certificates would enable voters to make informed decisions based on verified information rather than speculation or misinformation. He added that such a move would reinforce the credibility of the electoral system and ensure that every contestant is subjected to the same standard of public scrutiny.
Obi also urged INEC to continue implementing reforms that would improve transparency throughout the electoral process. He noted that public trust in democratic institutions can only grow when electoral procedures are conducted openly and fairly, with equal treatment for all candidates.
His remarks come amid increasing political preparations for the 2027 general elections, with parties finalising nominations and candidates positioning themselves for the nationwide polls. The call has already generated discussions among political stakeholders and citizens, many of whom believe greater transparency could help reduce disputes over candidates’ qualifications and improve confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
