Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has hailed the overwhelming victory of Chief Ikeje Asogwa in the Enugu North Senatorial District by election, describing the outcome as a clear affirmation of the growing dominance and acceptance of the All Progressives Congress across the state. The governor said the election result demonstrates a major shift in Enugu’s political landscape and reflects the confidence voters have placed in the party’s vision for the future.
The Independent National Electoral Commission officially declared Asogwa the winner of the senatorial contest conducted on Saturday to fill the seat left vacant following the death of former Labour Party senator Okey Ezea, who passed away after an illness in November 2025. The Enugu North Senatorial District comprises six local government areas namely Nsukka, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Uzo Uwani, Igbo Etiti and Udenu.
According to the results announced by Returning Officer Professor Christian Ezeibe, Asogwa secured a commanding 162,360 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Dr Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 9,299 votes. Reacting to the outcome, Governor Mbah described the result as a landmark and statement victory for both his administration and the APC. He said the people had not only chosen quality representation but had also signalled their alignment with the party’s direction and leadership.
The governor congratulated Asogwa and praised him as a people’s champion who has consistently demonstrated commitment to public service. He expressed confidence that the senator elect would effectively represent the interests of the district at the national level and help strengthen collaboration between the state government and the federal administration.
Mbah further argued that anyone who previously doubted the APC’s growing influence in Enugu should now accept that the party has emerged as a formidable political force across the state. He noted that the victory goes beyond electoral numbers and reflects the trust citizens have placed in the current political direction being pursued.
Political observers believe the by election result could have far reaching implications for Enugu politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. Traditionally regarded as a stronghold for opposition parties, the state’s evolving political alignment could reshape future contests and strengthen the APC’s national influence in the South East region.
