A tragic day unfolded in Lagos State as separate incidents involving a building collapse and a serious road accident left one person dead and another critically injured, raising renewed concerns about safety standards in construction and transportation across the state. Emergency responders were forced into swift action as they battled to save lives and prevent further casualties at both scenes.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the first incident occurred along Old Abeokuta Road inward Abattoir, where a truck carrying a 40-foot container reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the road. Emergency officials disclosed that the driver of the Highlander sustained serious injuries, including severe fractures to both legs and his left arm. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to extricate him from the mangled vehicle before he was rushed for medical treatment. Two other occupants of the SUV escaped the crash without injuries. Authorities confirmed that no deaths were recorded in the accident despite the magnitude of the collision.
While emergency personnel were still responding to the road accident, another distress call reported the partial collapse of a three-storey building under construction at Josephine Fingesi Street in Lekki Phase 1. The collapse triggered panic among residents and workers in the area as fears mounted that several people could be trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue operations commenced immediately, with personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Building Control Agency and other emergency agencies mobilized to the site. Their efforts led to the rescue of seven adult males who were pulled out alive and stabilized by medical responders. However, one victim was recovered dead from the debris, while another person was reported missing as search operations continued.
Officials revealed that a total of nine people were affected by the building collapse. Heavy equipment and specialized rescue teams were deployed to comb through the wreckage in a race against time to locate anyone who might still be trapped beneath the structure.
