The United States government has announced a major humanitarian intervention package worth more than $240 million aimed at supporting vulnerable populations affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and food insecurity across several countries, including Nigeria. The funding, which will be channeled through Catholic Relief Services (CRS), is expected to provide urgent assistance to millions of people facing humanitarian challenges in some of the world’s most fragile regions.
The funding initiative was unveiled by the U.S. Department of State as part of a new series of global humanitarian awards designed to strengthen emergency response efforts and ensure that life-saving assistance reaches affected communities more quickly. Nigeria is among the countries selected to benefit from the intervention, alongside Burma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti and Sudan. These nations continue to face significant humanitarian pressures arising from armed conflicts, displacement, health emergencies, climate-related disasters and economic hardships that have left millions in need of urgent assistance.
The funds will support a wide range of humanitarian activities, including food assistance, nutrition programmes, healthcare services, clean water provision, sanitation projects, emergency shelter and other essential relief efforts. Officials said the intervention would help strengthen the capacity of Catholic Relief Services and its network of partners to respond effectively to both sudden emergencies and long-term humanitarian crises.
A significant portion of the funding will also be directed toward a global rapid-response fund that allows humanitarian teams to mobilize resources immediately when disasters strike. By eliminating lengthy approval and procurement processes, aid workers will be able to provide emergency support faster and more efficiently to populations in distress.
The U.S. government highlighted the extensive reach of Catholic Relief Services, noting that the organization works through more than 160 Caritas chapters around the world.
