Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has ignited fresh debate within Nigeria’s political landscape after describing leading opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, as “office seekers” rather than genuine opposition leaders.
Speaking during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme, Baba-Ahmed questioned the effectiveness of the country’s opposition in responding to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. Referencing recent bomb attacks in Borno State, Baba-Ahmed argued that opposition figures have failed to demonstrate the kind of solidarity expected from leaders seeking to inspire public confidence. The former vice-presidential candidate recalled how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the late Muhammadu Buhari visited Maiduguri during the height of the insurgency years ago, describing such actions as examples of political leaders standing with affected communities during difficult periods. He maintained that many of today’s opposition figures have limited their interventions to online reactions rather than taking practical steps that would demonstrate commitment to the people.
Baba-Ahmed stated that posting messages on social media is not enough to qualify someone as an opposition leader, insisting that many politicians currently positioning themselves for future elections are primarily focused on securing political office. His remarks have drawn attention because of his previous association with Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, where both men ran on the Labour Party ticket.
Despite his criticism of the opposition camp, Baba-Ahmed singled out Rotimi Amaechi for praise, describing him as a politician with strong leadership qualities. He suggested that Amaechi stands out from many of the current opposition figures whom he believes have failed to provide effective leadership at a critical moment in the nation’s history.
