Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a cache of military grade ammunition in Kaduna State and arrested several suspects, including a married couple, in what authorities describe as a major security breakthrough amid growing concerns over the movement of illegal weapons across the country.
According to the agency, its officers on patrol along the Abuja Kaduna Highway intercepted a 30 year old suspect, identified as Sunusi Musa, who was allegedly transporting 380 rounds of military grade 7.62mm ammunition destined for Katsina State. Following the discovery, both the suspect and the recovered ammunition were handed over to the appropriate security authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
In a separate operation within Kaduna, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, after raiding their residence in the Gonin Gora area of the state. The latest arrests form part of a broader nationwide crackdown by the anti narcotics agency on drug trafficking networks and related criminal activities. NDLEA officials said the agency has intensified intelligence driven operations across several states as it seeks to disrupt criminal supply chains linked to narcotics distribution and other security threats.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned about the dangerous connection between illicit drug trafficking and violent crimes, noting that illegal arms and narcotics often move through similar networks. The interception of military grade ammunition along a major highway has therefore raised fresh concerns about the activities of criminal groups operating across northern Nigeria.
Beyond Kaduna, the agency also carried out successful operations in other parts of the country, including the seizure of illicit drugs in Lagos, Niger and Enugu states. NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers involved in the operations and urged personnel nationwide to sustain the momentum in the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes.
The latest development underscores the increasing role being played by the NDLEA not only in combating drug abuse and trafficking but also in supporting wider national security efforts through the interception of dangerous weapons and the dismantling of criminal networks operating across the country.
