The Peoples Democratic Party has stirred fresh political conversations across Nigeria after announcing Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The announcement, which has since gone viral online, was made by a faction of the PDP led by Abdulrahman Mohammed during a political gathering in Abuja.

Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, a prominent ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, officially presented Onor as the party’s consensus choice after what he described as extensive consultations with party stakeholders across the 36 states and the FCT. According to Ortom, the decision followed weeks of engagements aimed at positioning the PDP for a stronger outing in the 2027 presidential election.

Following the declaration, Senator Onor was presented with the PDP flag and a certificate of return in a ceremony that immediately generated reactions on social media. A video showing the moment the former Cross River governorship candidate received the symbolic items quickly began trending online, drawing mixed reactions from party members, supporters, and political observers.  ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

The development has added another layer to the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as several parties continue to reposition themselves through alliances, primaries, and strategic endorsements. Members of the PDP in Oyo State reportedly backed Onor’s emergence shortly after the announcement, signaling support for the consensus arrangement within some sections of the opposition party.

Senator Sandy Onor, who previously contested the Cross River governorship election under the PDP, is regarded by supporters as a loyal party figure with strong grassroots connections. His emergence comes at a time when the opposition party is attempting to rebuild internal unity and strengthen its chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the next election cycle.

The announcement has also fueled debates within Nigeria’s political landscape over the future direction of the PDP, especially with ongoing speculations surrounding possible presidential ambitions by other major political figures including former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Political analysts believe the latest development could trigger fresh alignments and negotiations within the opposition camp in the coming months.
