The Federal Government has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration, also known as Eid-el-Kabir. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government as Muslims across Nigeria and around the world prepare for one of the most important festivals in Islam.
According to the statement, the government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora for witnessing another Eid celebration and urged citizens to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity, stability and continued progress of the country. The minister also encouraged Nigerians to embrace the values associated with Eid al-Adha, including sacrifice, obedience, compassion and generosity toward one another.
Eid al-Adha, popularly called Ileya in many parts of southern Nigeria, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before a ram was provided in his place. The declaration of the holidays means government offices, banks, schools and several businesses across the country are expected to suspend operations during the two-day period. Financial institutions have already begun informing customers about temporary branch closures while encouraging the use of digital banking channels and online platforms throughout the holiday.
The announcement has generated excitement among many Nigerians who are looking forward to travelling to their hometowns and celebrating with loved ones amid ongoing economic challenges. Transport hubs and major markets are also expected to witness increased activity as people make last-minute preparations for the festival.
The Federal Government further appealed to Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and maintain peaceful coexistence regardless of ethnic or religious differences. Authorities also assured citizens that security agencies would remain vigilant during the holiday period to ensure safety across the country.
