Tension and confusion erupted in parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after an angry mob reportedly attacked a United States-based medical doctor and set his sport utility vehicle ablaze following a false kidnapping accusation that quickly spiraled out of control.
The disturbing incident, which occurred around the 2nd Powerline Area in Ologuneru along the Eleyele-Ido Road axis of Ibadan, has once again raised concerns over mob justice, misinformation, and the growing tendency of residents to take the law into their own hands without proper verification. According to the Oyo State Police Command, the doctor narrowly escaped death after officers responded swiftly to a distress call indicating that an alleged kidnapper was about to be lynched by an enraged crowd.
Police authorities disclosed that the incident happened on Monday at about 2:30 p.m. when rumours suddenly spread within the community that the doctor was attempting to abduct a child. The alarm reportedly attracted scores of residents and passersby who descended on the man before the true facts surrounding the situation could be established. ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the mob, already agitated by increasing insecurity and kidnapping incidents in parts of the country, quickly became violent after hearing the unverified allegation. In the heat of the chaos, the crowd reportedly attacked the victim’s vehicle, vandalised parts of it, and eventually set the SUV on fire. Thick smoke was said to have engulfed the area as residents gathered to watch the shocking scene unfold.
The police, however, said preliminary investigations later revealed that the kidnapping allegation was entirely false. According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the victim was actually a Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States who had returned to the country and was moving around the area when the misunderstanding occurred.
Security operatives reportedly arrived at the scene just in time to rescue the doctor from the angry mob before the situation turned fatal. Officers dispersed the crowd and safely evacuated the victim from the area while efforts were made to restore calm. Despite the intervention, the doctor’s SUV had already been completely destroyed by fire before emergency responders could contain the damage.
The police condemned the mob action and warned residents against spreading false alarms or engaging in jungle justice. Authorities stressed that accusing individuals without proper evidence could lead to irreversible tragedies, especially in a climate where public fear over insecurity remains extremely high. The command also emphasized that anyone suspected of committing a crime should be reported to security agencies rather than attacked by civilians.
The incident has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over how quickly false information can provoke deadly violence. Some commentators blamed growing public distrust in the justice system and worsening insecurity for the increasing number of mob attacks across the country, while others argued that innocent citizens continue to face danger because of unchecked rumours and emotional public reactions.
Mob justice has become a recurring problem in several Nigerian communities in recent years, with numerous victims attacked or killed based on mere suspicion, allegations of theft, kidnapping, or other crimes without proper investigation. Human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that such actions undermine the rule of law and often lead to the death of innocent people.
The latest incident in Ibadan also comes amid heightened public anxiety over rising kidnapping cases and violent crimes reported across different states. In many communities, fear and frustration have fueled spontaneous mob actions whenever suspicious situations emerge, sometimes with devastating consequences.
As investigations continue, the Oyo State Police Command said efforts are ongoing to identify individuals involved in the attack and destruction of the doctor’s property. Authorities vowed that those responsible for the mob violence would be brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others who may consider taking the law into their own hands.
