The Academic Staff Union of Universities Academic Staff Union of Universities has once again expressed deep concern over what it describes as the persistent neglect of lecturers’ welfare in Nigeria’s public universities, warning that unresolved financial issues could soon push the system into another round of industrial action if urgent steps are not taken by the government.

The union said the situation surrounding unpaid salary arrears and delayed allowances has continued to worsen, leaving many academic staff struggling with financial instability while still expected to deliver quality teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. It stressed that these outstanding payments are not isolated cases but part of broader unresolved agreements with the Federal Government that have dragged on for years without full implementation.

According to the union, lecturers in several federal universities are still being owed different categories of arrears, including salary backlogs and earned allowances. ASUU noted that despite repeated engagements and promises, the issue of payment delays remains largely unresolved, creating frustration and deepening mistrust between the academic workforce and the authorities responsible for funding higher education...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

The Academic Staff Union of Universities further explained that the ongoing economic challenges in the country have made the situation even more difficult for its members. It pointed out that rising inflation, increased cost of living, and stagnant wages have significantly reduced the purchasing power of lecturers, many of whom are now finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic personal and professional obligations.

The union warned that the continued failure to prioritize university funding and lecturer welfare could have severe consequences for the stability of Nigeria’s education sector. It noted that the quality of academic work is already being affected in some institutions due to low morale among staff, inadequate resources, and the lingering uncertainty surrounding salary payments.

ASUU also reminded the government of past agreements reached with it, stating that repeated delays in implementation have weakened trust and made dialogue less effective over time. It emphasized that while it remains committed to peaceful negotiation, the patience of its members is wearing thin as unresolved issues continue to accumulate without meaningful resolution.

The union stressed that it does not take the option of strike lightly, but warned that continued disregard for its demands could leave it with little choice. It stated that industrial action remains a last resort, but one that may become inevitable if the welfare crisis is not urgently addressed.

Observers have noted that tensions between ASUU and the Federal Government Federal Government of Nigeria have historically led to prolonged disruptions in academic calendars, with students often bearing the consequences of stalled negotiations and shutdowns of public universities. The current warning therefore raises renewed concerns about the possibility of another nationwide strike.

Stakeholders in the education sector have continued to call for a more sustainable funding model for Nigerian universities, urging both parties to prioritize long term solutions rather than temporary fixes. Many argue that constant disputes over salaries and arrears reflect deeper structural issues in the education system that require comprehensive reform.

As discussions continue to loom, ASUU maintains that only swift and concrete action from the authorities can prevent another breakdown in academic activities. The union insists that addressing unpaid arrears, improving welfare conditions, and fully implementing past agreements are critical steps toward restoring stability and confidence in Nigeria’s public university system.
