A major battle erupted in Yobe State after troops of the Nigerian Army successfully repelled a coordinated attack launched by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province fighters on a military base and checkpoint, leaving about 50 terrorists dead while two soldiers paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

According to military sources, the attackers struck in the early hours of the operation, targeting a military installation and a nearby checkpoint in a well coordinated offensive aimed at overwhelming security positions. However, troops responded swiftly and engaged the insurgents in a heavy gun duel that lasted for several hours.

The confrontation reportedly saw intense exchanges of fire as soldiers held their ground and resisted multiple waves of attack. Security officials confirmed that no fewer than 50 insurgents were neutralised during the encounter, while two soldiers lost their lives and others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The fallen personnel have since been described as gallant officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the territorial integrity of the country.

Following the successful repelling of the attack, troops reportedly carried out a mop up operation in the area, recovering weapons, ammunition and other items left behind by the fleeing terrorists. The recovered materials are expected to provide intelligence support for ongoing counter insurgency operations in the region.

Military authorities described the operation as a major success in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the North East, noting that the coordinated nature of the attack reflects continued desperation by insurgent groups to target military formations despite sustained pressure from security forces.

The Nigerian Army also reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist elements, stressing that troops will continue to dominate the battlefield and deny insurgents freedom of action across Yobe State and the wider North East theatre.

Residents of affected communities have been urged to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with credible information that could aid future operations, as the military intensifies efforts to restore lasting peace in the region.

The latest clash adds to a series of recent engagements in the North East, where troops have continued to record significant successes against ISWAP and Boko Haram elements, even as the conflict remains a persistent security challenge in parts of Nigeria.
