Fear and confusion have gripped Eda Oniyo community in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State after armed men stormed a church during a night service, killing the pastor and abducting several worshippers in a brutal attack that has once again raised concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Nigeria.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening during an open-air crusade held on the outskirts of the community. Eyewitness accounts and community sources revealed that the attackers arrived in large numbers and opened fire on the congregation while the service was ongoing, causing worshippers to scamper for safety in different directions.  ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

During the chaos, the presiding pastor was shot dead on the spot, while several members of the congregation were forcefully taken away by the gunmen. The victims, which reportedly included women, children, and elderly persons, were marched into a nearby forest as the attackers operated for several minutes without immediate resistance.

Although the exact number of abducted worshippers has not been officially confirmed, residents say the figure is significant and still being verified as families and community leaders attempt to account for those missing. The uncertainty has deepened anxiety in the area, with many residents staying indoors out of fear of further attacks.

Sources within the community described the attackers as heavily armed and coordinated, noting that they arrived suddenly, surrounded the church premises, and carried out the operation with alarming ease. One witness explained that the gunmen appeared to have prior knowledge of the location and timing of the service, which contributed to the level of vulnerability experienced by worshippers.

Security authorities have since confirmed the incident and disclosed that efforts are underway to track down the attackers and rescue the abducted victims. Police operatives, alongside other security formations, have reportedly been deployed to the area to begin search-and-rescue operations and comb surrounding forests where the victims are believed to have been taken.

Officials also assured residents that intelligence-led operations are ongoing and urged the public to remain calm while providing useful information that could assist in locating the perpetrators. However, no arrests have been announced at the time of filing this report.

The attack has added to growing concerns over recurring violent incidents targeting rural communities and places of worship in different parts of the country. Religious gatherings, often held in open or semi-secured environments, have increasingly become vulnerable targets for armed groups, leaving communities exposed and security agencies stretched.

In Ekiti State, the latest incident has sparked renewed calls for stronger security presence in remote areas, particularly during night vigils and outdoor religious programmes. Community leaders are also urging authorities to review safety protocols for public gatherings, especially in locations far from urban centres.

For residents of Eda Oniyo, the tragedy has left a painful mark, with families waiting anxiously for updates on missing loved ones while mourning the loss of their spiritual leader. As investigations continue, the community remains in shock, hoping for swift action and the safe return of those abducted in the deadly attack.
