A major political shift is already taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections as Babajide Sanwo-Olu has openly thrown his weight behind his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, signaling what many insiders describe as a carefully planned succession strategy in Lagos State.

The announcement, which is already stirring conversations across political and public circles, reportedly followed a high-level closed-door meeting at the Lagos House in Marina. At the gathering, Hamzat formally declared his intention to run for governor, presenting his ambition before members of the State Executive Council and influential party stakeholders.  ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement did not come as a surprise to seasoned observers of Lagos politics. The state has long operated a structured succession pattern within the ruling All Progressives Congress, where loyalty, continuity, and internal consensus often shape who emerges as the next leader. Hamzat, widely seen as a loyal ally and experienced technocrat, appears to fit that mold perfectly.

Shortly after the endorsement, Hamzat publicly expressed gratitude, describing the governor’s support as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership ability. He noted that the backing reinforces his commitment to continue building on the current administration’s achievements.

Political momentum around Hamzat has been quietly building for months. Reports indicate he has been engaging key power brokers and stakeholders, including members of the influential Governance Advisory Council, as part of early consultations ahead of the 2027 race.   His recent meetings with top figures within the political structure further highlight a well-coordinated strategy rather than a last-minute ambition.

Even beyond Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement, support for Hamzat appears to be gaining traction within party ranks. Prominent figures and groups within the APC have already begun rallying behind him, fueling speculation that the party may lean toward a consensus candidate to avoid internal conflict.

Still, the road to 2027 may not be entirely smooth. Other aspirants are expected to emerge, and Lagos politics has historically been competitive despite internal arrangements. Names like Olajide Adediran have already surfaced in early conversations, suggesting that the race could become more intense as the election cycle draws closer.

For now, however, Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement places Hamzat firmly in the spotlight as the man to beat. In a state known for its political structure and influence on national politics, this move could shape not just Lagos’ future leadership but also broader dynamics within Nigeria’s ruling party.

One thing is clear: the battle for Lagos 2027 has unofficially begun, and it’s already heating up.
