Nigerian troops have recorded another major breakthrough in the fight against insurgency in the North-East after a deadly overnight battle with fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province in Borno State.

According to fresh reports, soldiers under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a coordinated attack on Kukareta community, killing a top ISWAP commander identified as Abu Umar Bundi Munzir alongside several other fighters.

The attack, which reportedly began shortly after midnight, saw terrorists attempting to overrun the area before troops launched a fierce counter-offensive that lasted for hours.  ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

Security sources confirmed that at least 25 insurgents were neutralised during the intense exchange of gunfire, with one fighter captured alive, a development seen as a potential intelligence breakthrough for the military.

Military authorities also revealed that troops recovered a significant cache of weapons during follow-up operations. Items seized include assault rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, mortar tubes, and large quantities of ammunition, indicating the scale and sophistication of the planned attack.

Despite the success, the operation was not without casualties on the military side, as two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

This latest development highlights the continued intensity of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations in the region. Over the years, ISWAP has remained one of the deadliest insurgent groups, frequently targeting military formations and communities across the North-East.

However, with sustained offensives and improved coordination, Nigerian troops appear to be tightening the noose on insurgents, forcing heavy losses and disrupting their operations.

For observers and security analysts, the capture of a live fighter could prove just as crucial as the battlefield victory, potentially providing intelligence that may shape upcoming military strategies in the ongoing war against terrorism.
