In a development that has stunned many Nigerians, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested two elderly men aged 83 and 78 for alleged involvement in drug trafficking in Abia and Ekiti States, highlighting the widening reach of illicit drug networks across all age groups.

According to officials, the arrests were carried out during separate operations as part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on drug dealers and traffickers. The agency disclosed that the 83-year-old suspect, identified as Pa John Ofiel, was apprehended during a raid in Aba, Abia State, following credible intelligence linking him to the sale of illegal substances. At the time of his arrest, operatives reportedly recovered about 700 grams of skunk, a strain of cannabis, which had been packaged in small retail quantities.

Investigators revealed that the elderly suspect admitted to previously working as a shoemaker before venturing into the illicit drug trade, a disclosure that has raised concerns about the socio economic pressures and circumstances pushing individuals into illegal activities, even at advanced ages...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

In a similar operation in Ekiti State, NDLEA officers arrested a 78-year-old man, Ogunjobi Samuel, at his residence in Ilupeju-Ekiti. Authorities recovered approximately 350 grams of cannabis from him, further confirming suspicions of his involvement in drug peddling.

The arrests form part of a broader enforcement effort by the agency, which has intensified operations across several states in recent months. In related developments, other suspects including younger individuals have also been apprehended in connection with larger consignments of illicit substances, indicating that drug trafficking networks cut across different demographics.

The shocking involvement of octogenarians in drug related crimes has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief that individuals in such advanced age brackets could be linked to criminal activities of this nature. Analysts, however, note that the drug trade often exploits vulnerable individuals regardless of age, especially in communities facing economic hardship.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the crackdown, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of status or age, will be exempt from prosecution if found guilty of engaging in drug trafficking. The NDLEA has also continued to urge citizens to provide useful information that can aid in dismantling drug networks across the country.

As investigations continue, the case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of drug related crimes in Nigeria and the urgent need for both enforcement and preventive strategies to address the root causes driving individuals into the illicit trade.
