The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that no citizen was killed and no Nigerian owned property was destroyed during the recent wave of anti foreigner protests in South Africa, amid growing fears fueled by viral reports and social media speculation.
This clarification was provided by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who released an official situation report addressing the rising tension linked to demonstrations in parts of South Africa. According to her, while images circulating online suggested widespread violence, verified reports from South African authorities indicated that the protests were largely peaceful, with only minimal disruption recorded.
She explained that demonstrations held between April 27 and April 29, 2026, in cities such as Pretoria and Johannesburg did not result in confirmed attacks on Nigerians or their businesses. Despite the reassurance, the government acknowledged that two Nigerians lost their lives in separate incidents, although these deaths were not directly linked to the protests. The victims were reportedly involved in isolated encounters with security personnel, a situation the government described as unacceptable and one that is currently under investigation.
The Federal Government also confirmed that it is closely monitoring developments and has intensified diplomatic engagement with South African authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens living in the country. At the same time, officials warned that another round of protests is expected, raising fresh concerns among Nigerians residing in South Africa.
